Made and Found Objects

Let's Play With Type #1: Made and Found Objects
The book that I chose for this project is Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint.
Here are some covers for the different versions of the book.
These are the covers for the Taiwanese Version.
These are the covers for the Korean Webtoon.
These are the cover for the Korean hardcover.
There are the cover for the Korean novel.
This is how the Korean novel looks like without the book jacket.
As you can see, the covers for all the versions for this book have really illustrative covers showcasing some of the characters or scenes from the book. For my book cover, I decided to make the cover to represent some key concepts and themes of the book.
Book Overview
Summary: Dokja was an average office worker whose sole interest was reading his favorite web novel 'Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse.' But when the novel suddenly becomes reality, he is the only person who knows how the world will end. Armed with this realization, Dokja uses his understanding to change the course of the story, and the world, as he knows it. (webtoon.com)
As the title of the novel suggests, we see the world through our protagonist Kim Dokja’s viewpoint. Our protagonist is someone that knows everything about the current world from being the only reader who read 'Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse' therefore he is an omniscient reader. Throughout the novel, our protagonist uses his knowledge to survive and change the story to a desirable ending. The story setting has a game and lives stream-like systems. Dokkaebi are the streamers who are releasing monsters and making up scenarios where the main character and the rest of the world have to play along if they want to survive. They stream this through the Star Stream and the constellations are the ones watching the Star Stream. Constellations are powerful beings who are made up of stories and that's what keeps them alive and drives their power. As the novel progresses, the main protagonist builds up stories for himself and meets the requirements to become a constellation. Even as a constellation, he still continues to do the scenarios for the live stream. The novel has a heavy emphasis on stories or in general being a reader. When someone reads a story, the world of the story becomes part of them. This was the case for our protagonist.
So I decided to address this in the book cover. I decided to make the letters out of paper with text s
I played around with scratch paper and tape to make letters by twisting the paper.
Another key concept in the book are stars. The name of the stream channel is called the Star Stream, the beings that are made out of stories are called constellations, out protagonist is often refers to as a star and the book cover for the Korean novel is full of stars. So i decided to also implement that and showcase both the reader and stars idea into the book cover.
So a while ago I saw someone on Twitter recreated the Genshin Impact drip marketing font so I decided to go with that font.
This is how the font looks like. As you can see, it has stars which is why I picked this font to show the stars concept.
I wanted all the letters to have stars so i redrew the font so all the letters would have a star.
After I redrew the font, I went to Adobe Illustrator to edit the font.
After I finished the uppercase, I started working on the lowercase. The font does not have lower case so I tried looking for a font that was similar to the one I was using. I ended up choosing HYWenHei-85W, a font developed by Chinese professional font design which is also used on Genshin Impact.
This is how the font I edited looks compared to the original. The left is my edited version and the right the is original version. In my edited version, all the letters have stars.
This is how the lowercase I edited looks compared to the original. The right is my edited version and the left the is original version. In my edited version, all the letters have stars.
After I finished making my letters digitally, it was time to make them in real life now. I figures the twisting paper idea might be hard to do because the letters now have stars.
I decided to print the letters, cut them and trace them on cardboard.
I would then cut out the letters on the cardboard.
Using scratch paper, I crumbled it to give it texture and then I used glue tape or double sided tape to stick the paper to the cardboard cut out.
Repeated this process until I finished making all the letters.
These are all the uppercase letters.
These are all the lowercase letters.
For the graphics of the book cover, I also wanted to showcase both the reader and stars idea, not just in the letters.
For the cover I printed my favorite part of the book and ripped it to make a collage out of it.
After making the collage, I ripped a hole in the middle and took various pictures playing with lighting and shadows.
At first, I wanted to use this for the stars but saw that for shipping, it would arrive on March 2 which is when this project is due so I decided to improvise.
For the stars part, I used an a black acrylic plexiglass sheet I bought, glitter tulle and white glitter. I wrapped the glitter tulle on the acrylic plexiglass and sprinkled glitter on it to make it looks like stars. I took various pictures playing with lighting and colors. I ended up using a black and white pictures since it makes the glitter look more like stars.
Afterwards, I scanned all the letters I made and masked them using Adobe Photoshop. Now that I had everything, it was time to design the book cover.
This is the end result for my book cover.
I implemented both the reader and stars concept like I wanted. In the front cover you have the paper tearing and inside the tear, you have a starry night and the title of the book. The title of the books also refers to our protagonist. In the book, the protagonist enters his favorite novel so that why I made the title inside the tear to show how our protagonist is behind/ inside the story. You also have a starry night behind the tear to represent the idea of how the constellation beings in the books are made out of stories. The reason why I chose a blank page for the back of the cover is because our protagonist is inside the story and he is able to change it. The blank page shows that there is no set ending for the story, our protagonist can do whatever he wants to reach the ending he desires. There is no hard copy of the book in English and I could not find the reviews in the official site for the eBook since I cannot read Korean so for the back cover I just added a quote like the in the original Korean book. The quote I choose is "It was a story that was written for me and only me." The reason why I chose this quote was because this is one of my favorite quotes and I believe that this quote has a strong message and foreshowing for the whole novel. This quote becomes more relevant as you read because [spoiler] the story 'Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse' was really a story that was written for our protagonist and our protagonist only. The author of the book was a from the future and a companion of our protagonist. She wrote the novel so our protagonist could keep on living. That story was what stopped the protagonist from ending his life and made him want to keep on living to see the ending of the story. It really shows just how much the story meant to our protagonist or just in general how much can a story mean to someone.
